Dear Friends of the MCD
In Korean there is a saying—Shi-won-sop-sop hayeo—which indicates that one is feeling both happiness and sadness. It is often used when one is filled with excitement at returning home, but has to say farewell to close friends left behind. At the end of another year, we are naturally filled with happiness that the work of teaching, studying, examining, correcting, and administrating are almost over for 2007, and the seasons of Advent, Christmas and New Year promise a time of renewal of spirit, soul and body.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there is sadness involved also as we come to the end of the year, at tasks that weren’t completed in 2007, of plans that didn’t quite eventuate, and through the farewelling of friends and colleagues who are retiring, moving on, or relocating to Kazakhstan. But I also suspect that we share a collective feeling of relief and satisfaction that the year is over, and that in retrospect, acknowledge that things did work out through the grace of God in ways that we could never have expected, or imagined.

Dr Paul L Beirne - Dean

Is not this the very crux of the Christmas message, that the glory of God is experienced in the most unexpectedly humble, and vulnerable, of circumstances? Happiness and sadness, light and darkness, life and death followed Mary, Joseph and the baby from the very beginning. Has it not been the same for us? Accepting this, we rejoice together in our common humanity, and in the divinity we carry within. And we look forward with anticipation for more of the same in 2008, as unexpected and grace-filled as it will undoubtedly be.

With very best wishes of the Season

Paul

Dear Colleagues

The Staff Consultation Day was by all measures a great success, as the attached photograph bears witness. All those who participated agreed it was both enjoyable and informative, and that the welcoming ambiance created at the Treacy Centre stimulated discussion and interaction. Chairs of Examiners were elected that day; the Fields Meeting will be held on February 18, next year.

For those amongst us, who are very organized and already planning their activities for next year, please note that applications for the first meeting of the Grants and Scholarships Committee, must be submitted by Friday 8 February 2008.  Please send your applications to Dr Albert Haig, Director of Research, who will ensure they are considered; note that the Committee will not be able to consider retrospective applications given the number of applications does not permit sufficient funds to be kept in reserve, and those who adhere to the timelines and guidelines will be considered accordingly.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Sophia Soedira to the Research Office at Kew. Sophia has considerable professional experience in higher education particularly at Monash University where she was not only employed but also gained one of her master’s degrees.

Rosheen Myers, YTU, has many talents; however, her photographic skills are exemplified by the photograph of the Registrars at the farewell lunch for Bruce Tudball who, with some sadness, left us for fields afar.  On the other hand, the appointment of John Bartholomeuzs is good news, given the sound experience in the tertiary sector and the broad range of skills John brings to the role of Associate Registrar.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all well for the Christmas period and for the coming new year, and at the same time to thank all those who have been so helpful during my first year at the MCD.

Yours most sincerely
Liz

A picture tells a thousand words, so two tells almost the whole story.
The signing of the MCD MoU with the United Faculty of Theology ( UFT) was indeed a momentous as well as happy occasion. Attended by representatives of the three colleges of the UFT, the ceremony signified the importance of the relationship; the UFT was represented by the Rev Dr Robert Gribben as one of his last and most significant acts in his role as President of the UFT.
